5 activities on land not to miss on Bonaire

When Bonaire was first discovered by the Spaniards end of the 15th century Bonaire they called it "Isla Inutila" the useless island. Understandable enough for gold hungry explorers and adventurers Bonaire must have not seemed like much more than a dry rock in the middle of the ocean. Little did they know about all the activities Bonaire has to offer.

Read further to find out which 5 things you should not miss.

1. Hike up the Brandaris

The Brandaris is the highest point of Bonaire with 241m (784 ft.) and is in the Washington Slagbaai National Park. The trail is a 45-minute hike to the top of the Brandaris. This is a medium-difficulty climb, and the view from the top is a really fantastic reward for making the trip. On a clear day you can see Curacao. This trail does not start at the Visitor Center of the park; you need a vehicle to enter the park.

2. Onima Indian Cave Inscriptions

Small signposts direct the way to the Indian inscriptions found on a 3-foot limestone ledge that juts out like a partially formed cave entrance. Look up to see the red-stained designs and symbols inscribed on the limestone, said to have been the handiwork of the Arawak Indians when they inhabited the island centuries ago. The pictographs date back at least to the 15th century.
